How to start a career in veterinary medicine in Canada
Vancouver vet and veterinary assistant Brenda Smith has been working in the industry for the past 20 years.
She is now looking for work in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, as a veterinarian technician, and as a veterinary nurse practitioner.
Smith told Al Jazeera that she believes she has found a niche in veterinary training that is well-suited to her qualifications.
“Vets have always had this stigma of being very good at something, but they also have this stigma that they’re good at everything,” she said.
“I think it’s a bit different because you have to think outside the box a little bit.”
A career in medicine is a unique skill set that many vets are not able to offer, but Smith said she had seen the value in being an assistant in veterinary hospitals, where she was able to learn from people who had been working the same way.
“In a veterinary hospital, you learn a lot of things from a lot more people,” she explained.
“You learn how to be a better doctor, how to treat the patients and how to communicate with the patients.
You learn how they live their lives, and what it’s like for their families, and how they get along with other people.”
The most important thing, she said, was the work itself.
“It’s really important to get the job done,” she added.
Smith’s career as a vet assistant started in the early 2000s, when she was in the hospital, helping patients, and teaching them about their needs.
She then moved on to the field of veterinary medicine, where her job as a hospital assistant grew more demanding and demanding.
In 2009, she became a full-time veterinarian assistant, helping to run the Vancouver clinic where she works.
“For the most part, vets are very good with patients, but the more you do it, the more important it is to know how to deal with them, how not to hurt them, and that sort of thing,” she told Al-Jazeera.
“When I first got into it, I thought that the way I was going to learn about people was going through the hospital.
“That’s one of the reasons I think it makes me a better veterinarian.” “
Now that I’ve become a full time veterinarian assistant and am doing a lot in my free time, it’s definitely a more demanding role, but I’ve learned a lot,” she concluded.
“That’s one of the reasons I think it makes me a better veterinarian.”
Al Jazeera spoke to Smith about how she is adjusting to being a fulltime veterinary assistant, the role she now takes on, and her advice for aspiring vets looking to make a career as an assistant.
“There’s definitely more pressure now,” she admitted.
“The hours have been reduced.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been working nights or weekends, but now I do get to work at my home.
It seems like that’s where my career has been going since I got into the field.” “
And when I’m at home, I have a lot to look forward to, because I get to spend time with my family, with the dogs, with people.
It seems like that’s where my career has been going since I got into the field.”
Smith has also found her way to some of the most popular sites in the field.
“People tend to gravitate towards the [Veterinary Clinic] and Animal Hospital sites,” she commented.
“A lot of people say, ‘Oh, I’m really interested in working with animals.’
“If you’re interested in doing some of those, it seems like the only place you’d want to go is to a vet school.” “
She added: “Vaccines are an important part of the lives of animals and people, so it’s good to see people who have a background in this area get involved in it.” “

Smith says that the best thing about becoming a vet associate is that it allows her to learn more about the people who work in hospitals and veterinary clinics.
“My job is not just to work and learn from the vets, but also get to know the people and the people’s families,” she continued.
“They’re also great people and they are the ones who are going to help me through the journey.”
